A Romantic Surprise Proposal at Letchworth State Park | Stephan & Annie

There are few places more breathtaking to propose than Letchworth State Park, and Stephan couldn’t have chosen a more beautiful setting to ask Annie to spend forever with him.

Traveling all the way from Connecticut, Stephan had every detail carefully planned. Dressed up for a romantic evening and dinner at the historic Glen Iris Inn, he suggested taking a walk to the famous Upper Middle Falls overlook before sunset. To Annie, it was simply a chance to enjoy one of New York’s most beautiful state parks together. Little did she know, the biggest moment of her life was only minutes away.

As a Letchworth State Park proposal photographer, my job often involves blending into the background while keeping a close eye on everything happening around me. Proposal photography is all about timing, planning, and sometimes… quick thinking.

As the couple waited their turn to step into one of the park’s most iconic photo locations, another visitor began walking toward them. With only seconds to spare, I quietly walked over, tapped him on the shoulder, and discreetly pointed toward Stephan and Annie.

He immediately understood.

The gentleman had simply been walking over to offer to take a photo of the couple with their phone before they left. It was such a kind gesture, and once he realized what was about to happen, he graciously stepped back so the proposal could unfold exactly as Stephan had envisioned.

Then came the moment.

Stephan asked Annie to turn toward the waterfalls.

As she admired the incredible view of Upper Middle Falls, he quietly dropped to one knee behind her.

The instant Annie turned around and realized what was happening, she did something I’ll never forget.

Instead of simply saying yes, she dropped to her knees too, wrapping Stephan in the biggest hug. It was one of the most heartfelt, emotional proposal reactions I’ve had the privilege of photographing.

For a few moments, nothing else existed except the two of them.

One of the wonderful things about proposing at Letchworth State Park is that there are endless scenic locations nearby. Since the overlook is one of the busiest areas in the park, we quickly made our way to a peaceful, overgrown grassy field where the crowds disappeared.

There, Stephan and Annie celebrated with a champagne toast while the evening light wrapped around them, creating the perfect atmosphere for their engagement portraits. Afterward, they headed to the Glen Iris Inn to celebrate the beginning of their next chapter together.

Being trusted to photograph such an important milestone is something I never take for granted. Every proposal tells a different story, and no two moments are ever alike. From the careful planning beforehand to capturing genuine reactions as they unfold, surprise proposals remain some of my favorite memories to document.
