Golden Hour Engagement Session in Palmyra, NY | Kristin & Sean

There is something extra exciting about photographing an engagement session at a location I have never used before, and Kristin and Sean’s Palmyra, NY engagement session gave me so much to work with. Beautiful golden hour light, an incredible tree lined property, Sean’s old truck and, most importantly, two genuinely kind people who were so much fun to photograph.
As a Rochester, NY engagement photographer, I photograph couples at locations throughout Rochester, the Finger Lakes and Western New York, but I absolutely love when a couple introduces me to a location that is personal or completely new to me. It gives us an opportunity to create engagement photos that don’t look exactly like everyone else’s.
And this location was a GOOD one.
Golden Hour Engagement Photos in Palmyra, NY
We scheduled Kristin and Sean’s engagement portraits around golden hour, which is my favorite time of day for outdoor photography. The softer evening light gave us that warm, romantic look while still allowing the landscape to become a beautiful part of their photographs.
Then there were the trees.
This incredible line of mature trees looked like they had been planted hundreds of years ago specifically so Kristin and Sean could eventually have their engagement photos taken underneath them. 😂 They created the most beautiful natural backdrop and immediately became one of my favorite parts of the session.
Having never photographed at this particular Palmyra location before, I was able to explore the property with fresh eyes, watch how the light moved through the trees and find the little pockets that photographed beautifully.
Incorporating Sean’s Old Truck Into Their Engagement Session
One of my favorite things couples can do is bring something personal into their engagement session.
For Kristin and Sean, that was Sean’s old truck.
Instead of feeling like a prop that was simply brought along for photos, the truck belonged in their story. It gave us another setting to work with and added character to their gallery while still keeping the focus exactly where it belonged, on the two of them.
Your engagement photographs don’t have to follow a formula. Whether it’s an old truck, your dog, a family property, the place where you first met or simply a location you both love, those personal details can make your photographs feel even more like YOU.
Engagement Photos Shouldn’t Feel Like an Hour of Awkward Posing
One of the biggest concerns I hear from couples is some version of, “We’re awkward in pictures.”
Good news. You don’t need to know what you’re doing before you arrive.
That’s my job.
Throughout an engagement session, I’ll guide you through posing, movement and those little adjustments that make a huge difference in a photograph. We’ll create the beautiful portraits you want, but there will also be plenty of laughing, interacting and simply enjoying each other.
My goal is to create a gallery that has variety while still feeling natural to the two people in it.
An engagement session is also a great opportunity to work together before your wedding. By the time your wedding day arrives, you already know how I work, how I direct you and what some of my favorite posing techniques feel like. That comfort can make wedding portraits feel much easier when the big day finally arrives.
And speaking of wedding days…
Kristin & Sean Are Getting Married!
This certainly isn’t the last time you’ll see Kristin and Sean around here!
Their wedding is coming up in September, and I am so excited to photograph these two again and capture the next part of their story. If their engagement session was any indication of what we have coming, it is going to be an incredible day.
Kristin and Sean, thank you for such a fun evening and for trusting me with both your engagement photographs and your upcoming wedding. I cannot wait to do it all over again in September!
